A NEW HEAVEN AND A NEW EARTH

Our Devotion for Wednesday, March 29, 2023, is taken from: Amazing Grace Devotions for Lent by Michael Hoy.

1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.

Revelation 21:1 NRSV

A NEW HEAVEN AND A NEW EARTH

In John’s vision, grace restores what was broken in human history. All that had been ruined in the sinfulness of the past is replaced with a new creation, the place of the redeemed. And the sea, where the forces of evil once contended against humanity, is now gone. This vision, however, is not a call to be complacent, to abandon the earth or ignore the struggle against evil. The creation, including each one of us, cries and yearns for the day of freedom.

Jesus did not disregard people but healed those he encountered, and he often employed beautiful images from nature to help the faithful see the world through eyes of promise and newness. The vision for us today comes from this faith and hope in Christ. The work of loving grace remains to be done in our own cities and rural places, even as the bustling new city and paradise itself are filled with joy and peace.

Friends,

Michael’s reflection reminds us of the promise of a new heaven and a new earth awaiting us. As people of faith, Jesus calls us to be conduits of hope and healing, so that the world might be drawn to God. May we align our hearts to God’s purpose and plan, that we might bring to our families, neighborhoods, communities, and cities the transformative love of Christ.
