SECOND DAY OF ADVENT

The Advent prayer for Monday, November 28, 2002, comes to us from: Hark the Herald Angels Sing: Daily Prayers for Advent.

13 But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John.

Luke 1:13 NIV

Friends,

How long would you wait to receive the answer to your prayers? How faithful would you be in praying for an issue that has not yet resolved? Zechariah had been praying for his wife Elizabeth to conceive for years, but Elizabeth remained barren. Zechariah may have been ready to give up, but he continues to pray, then he has an encounter with the angel Gabriel who tells him: “your prayer has been heard.” Zechariah’s years of faithful prayer reminds us that God does answer prayer, but often not on our timetable nor within our desired timeframe. As we move into the Advent season, let us be reminded to be steadfast in prayer, firmly rooted that God will answer.

Advent Prayer - Day 2

Dear God, though we don’t hear from Gabriel as Zechariah did before John’s birth, we know you have sent us good news, too. Like the people who needed to repent because the Messiah was coming, we also need to turn away from our sins. Help us examine our actions and motives to see what we can confess, that we will also be ready for Jesus’ coming. Amen
