SEVENTH DAY OF ADVENT

The Advent prayer for Saturday, December 3, 2002, comes to us from: Hark the Herald Angels Sing: Daily Prayers for Advent by Stephenie Hovland

3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow.

Matthew 28:3 NRSV

Friends,

It may seem odd to have a scripture about the Resurrection in the middle of the Advent season. I’m sure Ms. Hovland chose it with care. Indeed, what the scripture for today keeps at the forefront of our minds is the life and ministry of Jesus the Christ. Lest we focus too much on the awe and wonder of the Christ Child and neglect to live as followers of the Christ. May this Advent season challenge us to hold in tension the miraculous birth with the sacrificial death, that we might dedicate ourselves to faithful and faith-filled living.

Advent Prayer – Day 7

Great Creator, we know angels don’t wear wrinkly white gowns like Clarence, and that your heavenly hosts hardly resemble the cute cherubs from Valentines cards. As we navigate the fictional images of angels, help us return to the Bible to seek truth. Thank you for creating angels, the bold creatures who serve and worship you. Thank you for sending them as messengers and guardians. We look forward to seeing them in your restored creation in heaven. Amen.

-Stephenie Hovland
