The Advent prayer for Friday, December 9, 2002, comes to us from: Hark the Herald Angels Sing: Daily Prayers for Advent by Stephenie Hovland
26 If one member suffers, all suffer together with it; if one member is honored, all rejoice together with it.
1 Corinthians 12:26NRSV
One of the many valuable lessons I learned on the football field was the importance of the team concept. Unlike, baseball or basketball, one player cannot do well without the efforts and dedication of another. In Paul’s letter to the Church of Corinth, Paul stresses the need we have for one another. The cited verse highlights the mutuality that exists within community of faith: “If one member suffers, all suffer together with int; if one member is honored, all rejoice together with it.” Paul is addressing issues of exclusion, a hierarchy based on economic status, and mistreatment within the Church of Corinth. Paul seeks to correct the misconception that some members of the church are more expendable and less deserving than others. As we continue to progress toward the manger, let us also take steps to meet the needs of those who are often overlooked.
Advent Prayer – Day 13
Heavenly Father, we pray for the body of Christ. In our local church community and the broad body of believers all over the world, we are all members of one body. We feel the pain of one another and are glad to celebrate together. Help us as we support our faith community and then also reach out to our neighbors who don’t believe. Help us to always be good neighbors. Amen.
