The Upper Room Devotion for Friday August 11th, 2023 was written by Cindy Lee of England, United Kingdom

1God is our refuge and strength,

a very present help in trouble.

2Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change,

though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea;

3though its waters roar and foam,

though the mountains tremble with its tumult. Selah

4There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,

the holy habitation of the Most High.

5God is in the midst of the city; it shall not be moved;

God will help it when the morning dawns.

6The nations are in an uproar, the kingdoms totter;

he utters his voice, the earth melts.

7The Lord of hosts is with us;

the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah

8Come, behold the works of the Lord;

see what desolations he has brought on the earth.

9He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;

he breaks the bow, and shatters the spear;

he burns the shields with fire.

10“Be still, and know that I am God!

I am exalted among the nations,

I am exalted in the earth.”

11The Lord of hosts is with us;

the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah

Psalms 46:1-11 NRSV

Authors Thoughts

I need a walk, I thought. I must have some time outside with God. Worries were pressing down on me. I live in a valley surrounded by abundant hilly countryside. When I'm facing challenges and my mind needs peace, I love walking up the hills to calm my heart and mind.

In the fresh air that day, my body and mind began to relax. As I trudged uphill, my legs ached, I was thirsty, and I could hear the sound of my breathing and feel the pounding of my heart. But determination and necessity pressed me forward. The challenge was worth it because I was away from distractions, and the quietness refreshed me. From the top of the hill surrounded by beauty, I gained a different perspective. My thought slowed down, and In solitude I was reminded that watever we face, we are never alone - our loving Father promises to watch over and guide us.

Sometimes we become exhausted when life is tough, expecially when stress overwhelms us. Whatever we are going through, God is close by, offering us strength, courage, and perseverance. We experience joy and spiritual growth in our uphill walk with God.

Thought for the Day

God is by my side through life's uphill struggles

Loving Father, thank you for watching over us and guiding us. Give strength to those in need today. In Jesus name. Amen.
