Wednesday, the second week of advent's devotion comes from Michael Hoy's, "Light of Grace: Devotions for Advent."
And he shall be the one of peace
Micah 5:5 NRSV
Author's Reflection
Who is the "one of peace" that the prophet Micah delares? He is the coming Shepherd King who will come from humble origins and from Bethlehem, the city of David. He will shepherd his poor and oppressed people who have been cast aside by others and give them instead the security of life. And "he shall be great to the ends of the earth" (5:4).
This message of Micah would again come into play when the magi from distant gentile lands were searching for this one of peace whose light shines in the night. But it is truly the one of peace who searches for us to shepherd us and to grace us with life and wholeness. The magi would present their gifts before him, but the real gift, the gift of grace, was the one they would receive through this "one of peace." Jesus the Christ gathers all nations from all the margins of the world, from all the margins of social life, into this gracious light of peace.
Author's Prayer
Lord, you are the gift and giver of peace. Shine your light of peace upon us and upon all who are distant and on the margins of life. Amen.
