Tuesday, the second week of advent devotion comes from Michael Hoy's, "Light of Grace: Devotions for Advent."
In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David....And this is the name by which it will be called: "The Lord is our righteousness."
Jeremiah 33:15-16 NRSV
Author's Reflection
When the people of Israel went into exile, they lost everything - their homes, their temple, their king. These experiences would plunge the people into darkness. In the wake of all disaster, they were left wondering, "Will there be a time again of hope and peace?" To them, the prophet Jeremiah spoke of the coming of a new king in the line of David, one who will bring peace and righteousness again to the land.
We have witnessed many experiences of loss in our own lives or in the lives of so many people in our world. Is there peace and hope in the midst of such tragedies? For us, the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ is light that shines in the darkness of a world ravanged by loss. He is the new King in the line of David bringing the reighteousness that graces us with God's peace and hope for our future and the future of the world.
"Amazing Grace" declares, "God who called me here below, / Will be forever mine." Let the eternal promise of Christ's light of peace and our peace with God shine for one and all.
Author's Prayer
Lord, you bring us hope when we are in the midst of despair. You bring us peace in the midst of calamity. May we never weary in declaring your name, for you are our righteousness. Amen.
