Sunday, the fifth week of Lent - BE WHAT YOU ARE is written by Ed Arle

Your are the salt of the earth .....

Matthew 5:13

I can still remember these words of encouragement I heard from a friend years ago: "You are who you are, so be who you are." I can't remember now why he said those words to me. I may have been going through a hard time. But when I read Jesus' words, "You are the salt of the earth ...., " I think of my friend's words and how Jesus might be adding another layer of meaning to them: "Your are what you are, so be what your are ... the salt of the earth."

Jesus also said, "Your are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden" (Matthew 5:14). Jesus wants us to stand out, to make a difference in this world, all for his sake. Children are tought to sing, "This little Gospel light of mine; I'm gonna let it shine." I think it's time we join them.

Dear God, I look at the cross and believe you are calling me to make a difference in this world for Jesus' sake. Let your will be done. Amen.
