Saturday, the fifth week of Lent - UNDERSTANDING is written by Ed Arle

... Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.

John 13:1

It won't be long now. Palm Sunday, the first day of Holy Week, is one day away. The word holy means "special" or "set apart," and indeed it was. In the minds and hearts of Christians everywhere, this week is like no other, because of what took place in the life of our Lord. Our understanding comes from standing under the cross and coming to believe that what happened had to happen because of our sin. Jesus knew that too.

We feel shame about the crucifixtion and what Jesus did for us. These words from the hymnist Isaac Watts echo in our minds: "My richest gain I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride." In humility, we bow our heads in sorrow for what heppened on Good Friday, but then in faith we are quick to embrace what happened three days later: Jesus rose again.

Dear Lord Jesus, I am yours and you forever are mine. Amen.
